The “博多” (Hakata) in the shop name, and the “博多” and “福岡” (Fukuoka) in the product name shown on Rakuten Ichiba’s product page, are the shop name and a name used for the product; they do not indicate where the raw ingredient comes from (the product page states the country of origin of the walleye pollock ovaries used as the raw ingredient as Russia or the United States). Taking into account that the product page describes it as a “wakeari” (imperfect/irregular, sold at a discount) item packed with mentaiko whose roe broke or that was cut into small pieces during production, this article organizes the amount, shelf life, ingredients, gift suitability, and reviews of Umamido’s (うまみ堂) uncolored karashi mentaiko (chili-seasoned pollock roe) in small cut pieces (“kogire”), 1kg. Because how many servings it makes, whether heating is required, and whether it can be refrozen could not be confirmed on the product page, they are marked as not confirmed.

Text the shop placed in the image reads “製造過程で小さく切れてしまった明太子を集めました!” “贈答用としては使えないため、格安価格でお届けいたします!” “※写真はイメージです” (in English: small pieces cut during production were collected; not usable as gift items, so delivered at a bargain price; the photo is an image only).

Ingredients and Allergen Labeling

The ingredients field of the Rakuten Ichiba product description (viewed September 30, 2026) reads as follows.

Walleye pollock ovaries (Russia or the United States), fermented seasoning, salt, soy sauce, chili pepper, bonito-flavored seasoning, seasoning (amino acids, etc.), sweetener (sorbitol), antioxidant (vitamin C), niacin, enzyme, color-developing agent (sodium nitrite) (part of the ingredients contain wheat and soybeans)

The only allergen statement is wheat and soybeans at the end of this ingredients field. We could not find a separate field on Rakuten’s product page that shows allergies or specified ingredients. The same shop’s two product pages on Amazon list the ingredients in the same order and also say they contain wheat and soybeans (only the order of the origin differs: on Amazon it is the United States or Russia). The statements in the three places do not conflict as far as allergens are concerned.

If you have an allergy, please check the shop’s listing before buying, and the food information label on the product once it arrives.

Five Things to Check Before Buying

Point to checkFor this productSource
1. Amount & servings 1kg. Number of servings: not confirmed Shown in the name on the product page. No number of servings is stated
2. Storage & shelf life Frozen. Best-before date is within 180 days if kept frozen (within 60 days recommended), and within 10 days refrigerated after thawing Rakuten Ichiba product page, product description
3. Ingredients & allergen labeling Stated to contain wheat and soybeans in part of the ingredients Ingredients field of the Rakuten Ichiba product description (the same shop’s Amazon product pages state the same)
4. Suitable as a gift? Stated as not supporting noshi (gift-wrapping label). A statement to the effect that it is also recommended for gifts and a statement to the effect that it is for home use and not suitable as a gift both appear on the product page Product description and images on the product page
5. Review trends The Rakuten Ichiba rating is 4.59 / 5 (2,604 reviews). Trends by theme are in the “What Public Reviews Say” section (120 reviews read in total; may not reflect the product’s current condition) Rakuten customer reviews (“Minna no Review”) (viewed September 30, 2026)

Suitable as a Gift?

What we could confirm from the product page is as follows (viewed September 30, 2026).

  • Noshi: the product description says it cannot be supported, and an image on the product page also labels it as an item without noshi support. Because noshi is not supported, the types of inscription (such as oseibo, year-end gifts) do not apply
  • Gift wrapping, message cards, and name printing: could not be confirmed
  • If ordered as a gift: the page says the orderer’s information appears in the sender field, the shop’s information is not printed on the shipping slip, no statement showing the amount is included, and only the serving instructions are enclosed
  • Conflicting statements: the beginning of the product description has a sentence to the effect that it is also recommended for gifts. On the other hand, the same description says it is sold for home use and does not support noshi, and images on the product page also say to use it at home and that, unlike whole-piece mentaiko (“一本物”), it is not suitable as a gift

Because the product page’s statements are split in this way, this article does not position this product as suited to gifts. If you are considering it as a gift, please also consider the points above, as well as that it is a frozen item and whether the recipient has freezer space for 1kg.

Rakuten customer reviews (“Minna no Review”) also included posts saying it was bought as a gift and was well received (we read the first 60 reviews in the default order and 30 each filtered to 1★ and 2★, 120 in total. The posts date from February 2019 to September 2026, and the latest is from September 2026. This trend may not reflect the product’s current condition. Details are in the “What Public Reviews Say” section).
