Key Dates for Donating Before Year-End Year-end

The deduction covers donations made from January 1 to December 31. If you donate late in the year, both the delivery timing and the paperwork deadline matter.

December 31End of the donation year

Donations up to this date count for that year's deduction. Applications peak at year-end, and some gifts ship after New Year. Each article's shipping section notes the shipping slots shown on the application page and whether arrival within the year is stated.

Year-end holidaysShipping pauses

Each municipality and producer pauses shipping on different dates. If the application page does not promise year-end arrival or state a deadline, our article marks it "Not confirmed" and does not say it will arrive within the year.

January 10 (next year)One-Stop Exception deadline

The One-Stop Exception application must reach the municipality by January 10 of the following year (some municipalities accept online applications). It is for salaried workers and others who do not file a tax return and who donated to five or fewer municipalities in the year.Source: municipalities' One-Stop Exception guidance

March 15 (next year)Tax return deadline

If you donated to six or more municipalities or file a tax return, claim the deduction in your tax return. Filing a return cancels any One-Stop Exception applications.Source: National Tax Agency, No.1155 (in Japanese)

What We Check in Gift Articles Our checks

  2. Storage and shelf life
  3. Ingredients and allergen labeling
  4. Suitability as a gift
  5. Review trends

Three extra points for furusato nozei

  • The municipality you donate to
  • Donation amount (per application site, with the date checked)
  • Shipping period (including whether year-end arrival is stated)

Anything we cannot confirm on the application page is marked "Not confirmed" rather than guessed.

What We Don't Write What we don’t write

  • Wording that presents a donation as a bargain, such as "great value", "return rate" or "effectively 2,000 yen"
  • Information about points (since October 1, 2025, Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications prohibits soliciting donations through portals that give points)
  • Calculations of your personal deduction or limit, or advice on how to file (each application site offers a limit simulator)
  • Taste reviews (we have not bought or tasted the gifts)

How It Works and Who Can Use It Basics

  • The part of a donation above 2,000 yen is deducted from income tax and resident tax, up to a limit.
  • The resident tax deduction applies to people who have an address in Japan on January 1 of the following year and pay resident tax there. Nationality does not matter.
  • Gifts are normally delivered to the donor's address. Application pages are often in Japanese only, and the One-Stop Exception requires a My Number.
